It was a good idea. They still work good today.
Some times people forget that when this type tools were equipment on tractors and pickups that there were several areas that did not have electricity, or tire service companies or farm centers or service trucks. If there had been mobile services available most folks would have still repaired their own tires anyway.
For tractor or pick up truck tires they were wonderful, they beat the heck out of a hand bicycle tire type pump. Them old pumps and "Monkey Grip" brand self vulcanizing patches were used alot.
John Deere also had a small air compresser that you slipped onto the pto and pumped up a tire. Just about the size of a medium coffee can.

I had an air compresser by Lincoln that had a Continental 4 cylinder engine, it ran on 2 cylinders and 2 cylinders had the same schrader valves in it that you're talking about here.
It would build enough air to run jack hammers and 1" impact wrenches very good.
