I've rebuilt many a tractor motor as well as car and racing motors. By far the best product to use is the Loctite/Permatex spray on copper gasket sealer. Many head gaskets you get now a days for the IH motors require some sort of sealer.
I always spray on 3-4 light coats with each layer somewhat tacky before the next goes on. As for the rest of the motor use RTV blue on the valve cover and oil pan. Aviation grade sealer on all studs, bolts that go into the motor, and the expansion plugs. Let this aviation stuff dry for 12 hrs before starting the motor. A good rule of thumb is if the gasket is a cork type use RTV blue. If its thin paper or cellulose use the aviation grade sealer. Haven't had a leak yet on anything ive ever assembled. Hope this helps and if anyone out there dissagrees with me let me know I may just be a little over zealous when it come to preventing leaks.
