Amen Andy, Detergent oil doesn't clean them out. I suspect a lot of people think that because of that old Mobile add for oil that looked like a washing machine and drive your engine clean slogan. I have scrapped many junk engines that had detergent oil in them and were full of crud but that was just from poor maitenance. One I saw caused a rod to start knocking because they flooded the engine badly and then later got it running and drove it without checking anything. The next day the rod went. Gas had gotten into the crankcase past the rings and was about 3 inches up past full on the stick. The gas cleaned everything inside and the crud settled out overnight and burried the oil pickup screen. Next day no oil pressure and poof! when I pulled the drain plug nothing came out until I poked it with a wire. That was on a 4 year old at the time, Aerostar minivan a customer brought in. and there was a lot of crud in there from an engine that had always had detergent oil in it. Regular changes is the key to keeping one clean.
