the temp is a mechanical gauge. if it is not working, you need the whole unit, unless for some reason the sending bulb was removed from the engine and is just hanging loose. i would recommend a new fuel sender at the same time as the new gauge and test your wiring before installing, as the wrong wiring can fry a gauge in a hurry.
