Super A and Loader

I purchased a super A with a loader about 9 years ago, although I've never been really that fond of smaller tractors. It ran but was in desperate need of a rebuild and it had been used pretty hard in a fertilizer plant. I ended up with it after I declined to rebuild it for someone else whom was getting tired of having it around and not being functional. Immediately shipped it off to a friend whom was willing to rebuild the tractor in his spare time. Put a small fortune in the engine with new IH parts, reground crankshaft and hardened seats in the cyl head. Runs great but it now sets in his garage. Eventually he would like to paint and parade it, but he has progressed to a demanding job and has a wife with three kids and it might be another 8 years. Six years ago, I bought an unused Woods belly mower for it with JD 850/950 brackets, but it remains in the box at his house. I decided to bring everything back and do what is necessary to get the mower working. I've already got a parts list for the necessary brackets to fit to the SA so it shouldn't be too bad. The big question is the loader. It is a two arm, hydraulic bucket loader, with the auxilary hydraulic tank in front of the steering wheel between the two towers. The left fender also had to be removed to install the loader. Seems like I remember the owner thinking it was a Farmhand. Haven't seen the loader for 9 years, it is now stored in my friend's father-in-laws shed. My friend thinks it is too heavy for the tractor because it did cause a lot of front end axle damage that had to be repaired. Probably true and the plan is not to use it for "digging" but it would be handy for HIM to move stuff around or shove snow. I've already have two loaders so this one would likely never be used. The better half claims she might help mow around the farmstead if I get the mower working. I expect this to perhaps last one summer. The friend really doesn't have a big enough lot to justify using the mower, however it is very good chance the tractor will return to him and the estate executor can eventually worry about it. The loader has a lot of cracks and scabbed pieces so it also needs work to make it look OK. I have an retired excellent welder friend whom worked 35 years welding in a preproduction build facility and will do the work very reasonable, roughly $25/hour. So the question is, should I forget the loader and eventually sell it, or should I proceed? Not terribly worried about a few extra $ spent on this project, it has already demolished it's expected budget. I wonder if I'm expecting too much from this as a light duty loader tractor.

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
