Before I went to the added expense of going with the 6 volt charging system, I would borrow a fully charged 6 volt battery and install it. With just the battery I would see how well the tractor would start. If it starts ok and you want to remain 6 volts then get the charging components. If it does not start readily with the 6 volts, substitute a 12 volt battery and see how that works. After concluding what voltage you plan on using then install the matching charging system. You will have a couple of choices if you elect to use the 12 volts. You can replicate the 6 volt appearance by using a 12 generator and regulator or you can go with the cheaper approach using an alternator with built in regulator. Using a 12 volt battery has benefits as you can boost from a modern car/truck and batteries are easier to come by.
