Hi all, I posted yesterday about possibly buying a 350U. I have taken time to read many of the posts on this website about the steering issues of these buggers!
Last night I went back over to the gentlemans house that was selling the tractor. I took it for a short spin in 1st gear. Here is what I found... When the tractor was sitting still I had to really work to get the wheels to turn. When I started in gear they turned with ease. I could feel the power steering helping then. My question is. Is this normally how that type of power steering operates or is this due to a pressure issue or something else. I assumed I would be able to spin the wheels while sitting still due to the power steering much more easily than I found was the case. Possibly this is just how they work! When moving and turning the wheel the steering seemed pretty good, with what seemed to be very little play in it. Basically only about 1" of turning on the wheel resulted in the wheels turning as well which I assume to be pretty good?
Am I off base here? and is the tightness in the steering in fact just the way it is when at a dead stop? Or is there a pressure adjustment or something that may need adjusted. The owner told me it has been that way for the time he has owned it (6 years or so). He said he doesn't believe it leaks or anything. it just worries me reading all these stories and this tractor does have an IH loader on it as well so I know it was used for those purposes for sure.
I'm just trying to weight my options! This little unit does have a IPTO and a TA in it (he said he has not used the TA ever) Starts right up and I looked for obvious cracks in the front axle and didn't see any although I wasn't able to get down underneath and look.
The price seems very reasonable at $1850. Paint is also pretty decent for sitting outside the last 5 years. he kept it tarped.
