Farmall B - finding TDC

Just don't seem to be able to do it. I have rotated the flywheel all the way around...it is pretty clean...and I have yet to find a line running anywhere. I see the raised vertical bump on the flywheel cover easily enough but no mark on the flywheel. This mark should be (as I look thru the inspection hole) behind the gear teeth on the flat horizontal edge of the wheel, yes?
I see a splash of red paint at one point but no line. Also, I can't seem to tell by looking in the plug hole if the piston is all the way to the top. I could use some tips on this procedure. Apparently this is such a basic concept that they have no pictures in the manual. I'm going back out and put my thumb over the hole and see if I can get it lined up. Any other ideas or hints or tricks would be great. Thanks guys!
