354 fuel lift pump....again

my 354 (gas engine) has just started acting up recently and suddenly. after posting a msg here a couple weeks ago, i replaced the coil from suggestions, which didn't help. the fuel lift pump is leaking around where it connects to the tractor and there is gas in the oil pan. i cleaned out the pan, replaced the gasket and put fresh oil, and filter in the ol' girl. also, i removed the fuel lift pump and the gasket between the pump body and the chasis was awful. while taking the fuel lines loose from the pump, some gas got on the pump, and i couldn't tell if the gas i saw around the rocker arm was from something leaking in the lift pump itself or from the gas from the fuel lines. there shouldn't be any gas around the rocker arm unless something is wrong in the pump should there? how would this leak affect the running of the tractor? i took the bowl off the carb and while cranking, i could see gas going in the bowl. after i put the carb back together, it started and ran for awhile, but still didnt sound right. i drove it from the barn to the garage (100 yards) and then it sputtered, and died after backfiring some. could a leaky fuel lift pump cause this? case/ih dealers say there is no replacement fuel lift pump for the gas 354 (or repair kit) and have the diesel pump as the replacement. any ideas or help you all can provide would be appreciated.
