I'm going to quote directly from an original owners manual for F-12 magneto timing. "Crank engine slowly until impulse trips. The D.C. No. 1 mark on flywheel should be in line with, or not more than 8 degrees below (25/32" on flywheel rim) and never above the timing mark on flywheel housing when the impulse coupling trips." That said I have cranked the engine until the mag "trips" and looked for the D.C. mark on the flywheel. If it wasn't in the proper position, I would change the setting on the "fine tuning plate" by removing the two screws and rotating the plate in the proper direction. Be careful as these two bolts have to line up exactly with their respective holes or you will only be able to get one of them to start. Put it together, crank it slowly until you get the mag to trip at D.C. #1 and see where the mark on the flywheel is. Remember in which direction you have made your adjustments so you can correct them if you have moved in the wrong direction.
