well, people would do that because they can be had for a few hundred new instead of the 4-600 for a new belly pump. They are also easier to get, to plumb to service the filter. Chances are the guy had the pump laying around and for a few hours of work it was just easier and alot cheaper. There is always a reason. I wouldnt consider it messed up if done properly, it serves its function be it original or something homemade. =) Dont like it? Dont buy it =)
