Never measured one, but I would guess a starter would draw in the 100 - 200 amp range. Bigger cables are better. Six volt starters draw more current than 12 volt starters, so cables made for a 6 volt system would be heavier. One quick way to find the immediate problem is to crank the engine for a minute or two & then feel the various connections. A poor connection or a cable that's too small will get hot.
