You do not have to pull the differential to change the pinion seals on an M. The seal runs on the brake drum hub, not on the shaft. Once the brake drum is off, there is plenty of room to get in between the shaft and the seal to remove it. If the original thick seals are still in there, it can be a bit of a chore, but certainly easier than taking apart the transmission. To get the part out(pinion shaft and bearing cage) that contains the seal, you have to pull the axles out of the bull gear and drop the bull gear down, as the bull gear runs in a slot in the pinion cage.
