Keeps the generator or alternator from overcharging the battery. Older generators had cutout relays, which basically disconnect the generator from the battery when its not running, so that the battery doesn't discharge through the generator. Maximum current was limited by the generator itself, and it would take quite a while to charge a fully discharged battery. Voltage regulators work by varying the current through the field winding, whether on a generator or alternator. A regulator will reduce field current if the output exceeds either the maximum current the generator/alternator can provide without overheating, or if the output voltage exceeds what the battery can safely accept. Modern alternators have the voltage regulator built in, and use solid state electronics instead of relays, but they all perform the same function. Keith
