Does the shift lever move into the 5th gear position OK or does it "hang" close to the neutral gate? If the lever won't move into 5th you need to remove the "5th speed lockout screw" (located on the tranny deck forward and slightly to the left of the shifter tower) and replace it with a standard 3/8-16 x 3/4" cap screw. Otherwise the problem could be a worn or bent 4-5 shifter fork **or** the 4-5 sliding gear and/or the mating input shaft gear are badly worn. You'll need to remove the tranny cover to determine.
