As for your fuel guage its more than likely the sending units that are acting up. If you have or have access to an ohm meter, remove the sender from the tank, hook up the meter and move the float up and down. The meter should read steady but if it jumps around like it does the guage then thats the sender you replace. The top tank is easy to check but you probobly have a saddle tank also so make sure the fuel level is low enough before removing that sender.
