Behlen and Char-Lynn both made aftermarket systems for Farmalls. The Char-Lynn system has a pump that mounted on the left side of the tractor at the front of the governor box, and I'm pretty sure the rest of it was hidden under the hood. The Behlen units had a small pump that installed in the distributor drive, with a reservoir just ahead of the gas tank on the right side in the space where the extra gas tank for "distillate" tractors used to mount. The rest of the unit mounts above the gas tank and is installed by cutting the steering shaft in two. The Char-Lynn pump is noticeable as "non-original", but the Behlen steering motor is VERY noticeable! Both seem to work well, and should be available.
Since your SMTA should have live hydraulics, I'd think it would should be possible to use a feed off that pump to a Char-Lynn unit which would be out of sight. I haven't tried that, but I'll bet it could be done.

But it's important not to let that packaging lull you into a false sense of security. The appearance of matching sleeves, pistons, rings, and bearings can cause frustration and agony if not properly measured and installed in a workshop environment. Following c ... [Read Article]
