Just a few things if you have a complete farmall 400 engine. Crankcase vent pipe comes out top of valve cover on 400 and back of head on M. You can use suitable rubber hose to modify that. Governor throttle lever arm will be different.Take lever out of M and install in 400 or put M governor complete on 400 engine. 48 M has a 11 inch clutch,if thats what you use put the M flywheel on 400. If you use the 400 flywheel it takes a 12 inch clutch set up like SM or late M. 400 clutch plate is wrong splines. If you use stock 48 belly pump you have to use 11 inch clutch because they changed front case on late M and SM to clear 12 inch. Distributor drive that bolts to front cover on 400 is different bolt pattern than 48 M. If your going to use one and not the hydraulic pump find one with a 6 digit # ending in RI from SM or some 1950 M and newer.
