Changing PTO shaft H farmall

I am helping a friend work on a 1939 H farmall. It has the small PTO shaft and it does not work. Can a PTO shaft from a newer H that has the larger PTO saft be put in. Also, when working on the PTO shaft can you do all the work by taking the top plate where the seat is bolted down or do you have to split the tractor in half. Any help would be appreciated.
