A teacher of mine (who was an indy race mechanic) explained to me that, using a shaft tool with a diamond tip, the teeth on a gear engagement dogs (drive and driven)could be polished to be undercut so that they were interlocked when in gear. He said (and I believe from having done it successfully) it is a small amount removed from the drive sides of the splines tapering .001 deeper at the full extent of engagement, and nothing at the beginning where they are rounded from wear. If you have a junk gear to practice on, it might be a way to save a marginal gear or slider set. Also discussed was the importance of good intermediate bearings and front main bearings that maintain a correct alignment and prevent walking of the splines out of mesh. Just some thoughts.
