The oil is 90wt gear oil. 80-90 will do just fine. The way to get most water out is to drain just the water from the bottom after it has set still for several days. (I would replace the oil) drain it and feel around in the sump with a magnet on a flex stick (mechanics tool)to pick up trash and filings. Then I would flush a quart of kero, or diesel through the filler to the drain, and let it drip for an hour. Then refill. The whining is common on the cub. If it is too loud to tollerate, and varies with ground speed not which gear, the ring and pinion may be worn (especially if a lot of filings come out of the dif). They can make modest noise for years (especially with new oil) thicker oil in the 100ds of viscosity can quiet them some, and will work fine if you do not live in the NORT. JimN
