I bought a 1951 M in January. It had been starting fine, but this morning it will barely crank over. It’s still a 6 volt system, but had a new oversized Interstate battery when I got it. The metal case had been cut at some point to accommodate the larger battery. I was looking at the diagram, “Electrical Schematic for Farmall H/M Stock 6 volt w/cutout by wrm Aug 03” and noticed on my tractor the negative battery terminal is grounded to the tractor and the positive cable runs to the starter switch and then on to the starter. Now I’m wondering if that is causing a charging problem. But, if the cables are reversed at the battery, would the starter still rotate properly? (I figured it would run backward). Would that damage the generator or just keep it from charging? Can I simply reverse the cables at the battery so I have a positive ground and negative to the starter switch as the diagram shows or is there more I need to do to avoid possible damage (or is it already done?) If so what are the likely problem areas. Thanks in advance for all your help.
