I did my first TA job a couple years ago on our SMTA. The tractor has to be split at the motor and then you have to split the center section away from the rearend. The TA comes out as a unit, but usually what goes bad on them is what is called the ramp and rollers. Hy-capacity sells the ramp and rollers as a replacement for around $150. I also put in a bunch of seals and gaskets while I had it all apart for a cost of another $150 approx. We have a shop that has an overhead I beam and chain-falls that we use for splitting
If the TA also requires the replacement of the sun gears,etc.. it could get into alot more $. If I were going to do this on a tractor that I would be keeping for along time, I would also consider replacing thiongs like the Main clutch disk, TA clutch disk, etc. Someone sells a video that describes how to fix TA's Iv'e never seen it. The I&T manuals are very helpful also. The bottom line - If you got some time and a good place to work on it, GO FOR IT. If you get stuck, I guarantee someone on this board can get you out of it.
