Bob,

1) It appears youre gonna be upgrading from the older 2 wire Cutout Relay with light switch field control to the more modern full fledged Voltage Regulator (actually a better system). However, even if thats NOT what youre doing, the wiring instructions below still apply

2) It appears further youre not only upgrading to a Voltage Regulator, but to a 4 terminal VR which requires even a lil more variation to an older standard cutout relay or 3 terminal VR wiring diagram.

3) Although you could ignore and not even use the LOAD terminal on the 4 terminal VR (by wiring things a certain way, see below), I suggest you use it and heres how to wire her all up.

NOTE: If the genny happens to be a 3 brush adjustable type and youre now gonna use the VR, I would set the gennys third brush to the MAX CHARGE position.

NOTE: On some 4 pole VR's, the three terminals all together are the BAT FLD LOAD while the one off to one side or the bototm all by itself is the ARM.

WIRING:

Connect the gennys Field post to the FLD terminal on the VR. The gennys Field used to wire up to the light switch, DO NOT use that now....

Connect the gennys ARM post to the ARM/GEN terminal on the VR.

Connect the LOAD terminal to the BAT input side of any light or ignition switches or a combination light/ignition switch. It serves as the hot voltage input source to feed allll loads like lights and/or ignition. On a 3 wire VR or the older Cutout Relay system, those loads like lights n ignition were fed from the ammeters Load
terminal which is the same ammeter terminal that wires (still does) to the BAT terminal on a VR or Cutout Relay.

NOTE on a 3 terminal VR or the old Cutout Relay system, those type loads were fed from the Load (NOT battery/starter)side of the ammeter. When using a 4 pole VR with the L terminal, you DO NOT feed those switches (lights/ignition) from the ammeter anymore, so remove any wires from the ammeters load (NOT to battery/starter) terminal to the BAT input sides of lights or ignition switches and instead power them from the LOAD terminal on that 4 pole VR

The ammeters Load (NOT battery/starter) terminal terminal wires to the BAT terminal on the VR. That is the wire that used to wire down to the BAT terminal on the Cutout relay. The ammeters Load terminal still wires to the BAT on either a VR or a Cutout Relay.

The ammeters other input supply (NOT to loads or VR) terminal usually has but one wire, and thats to the starter switch or hot ungrounded battery post.

If you want to ignore the Load terminal on the VR and use it the same as a 3 terminal VR, simply ignore its L terminal and instead let the ammeters Load terminal feed the lights and ignition.

NOTE the VR and the genny BOTH need a good case/frame ground you know........

PS I would polarize the genny to make sure before you fire all this up.......
