M serial number plate

The last owner of our Farmall M, painted over the serial number tag. Also, looks like it has several small dings in it right over the serial number. (possibly someone trying to chip the paint off to read the tag, but instead denting in around the number making it harder to read.) How do I get the paint off of the tag, without harming/removing the integrity of the plate? Any thoughts on decifering the number through the dings? thanks DJL
