Once its running on gas the only problem I've ever had is trying to switch to diesel too soon when the engine is cold. Just need to let it run a little longer, sometimes a couple minutes.

Once trick I did discover (think from reading some of the archives here). When you're ready to make the switch to diesel, open the diesel throttle until you just start to get a little smoke, then push both levers to the diesel position. This minimizes the loss of speed during the changeover.
