I was debating whether to convert my H from 6 volts to 12 volts. I took the advice given from many of you and developed a plan. My H runs good but doesn't show a charge, and cranks over slow. First I accessed my situation and decided that with either 6 or 12 volts I would need ALL new wiring (battery cables, new starter switch, coil to distributor wire, battery wire to amp meter, switch to coil wire, wiring to generator, and regulator). I began doing this project in stages. I started by changing the battery cables with the nice heavy #1 gauge leads. The ones I took off were probably original and I'm amazed that they even worked at all! Next I re-wired everything else with #10 gauge wire using different colors so I could trace things easier. The old wiring was all red, and probably 16 gauge, half melted and cracked. I replaced one wire at a time and referred to the manuals and The Reds very nice pictures of "How the wiring should look" from previous postings (thanks for sharing those valuable pictures-- says a 1000 words!). While I was re-wiring I noticed the former owner never had the amp meter hooked up properly. Fixed this. Then I repolarized and fired the tractor up. It cranked MUCH better, and fired right up. I looked at the amp meter and it was showing a charge! Previously I thought I would need a new generator and regulator. I already had some wire, but If I had to do it over, I would have just bought a new harness.
I still have some questions though. There was a wire form the field terminal on the generator stud that connected to the long bolt that holds the generator together, kinda like grounding it. What was this for? What should my amp meter show for charging at low idle speed and full throttle? When cold and low idle I'm showing 0 to slightly above 0 and when cold at a fast speed the gauge shows 10 to 12. Also The Red posted a NAPA part number (1195 LMP), is this for sealed beam 6 volt type lights? Lights are my next little project so I can play in the dark!
