Is this a generator or an alternator? If it is an alternator, when you inadvertently reversed the polarity, you may have shorted the rectifiers in the alternator. This could account for the battery drain. Try looking inside the ammeter box & see if there might be a wire or two that are possibly touching or contacting a ground.
