Easier Than I thought.....Not Really

Posted a question last night about seal replacement for the flat belt gear box on my farmall H and nobody had done one before.Figuired it out not too bad to do but you have to be carefull or you can damage around $100.00 worth of parts.And oh yeah you can do it without removing the whole gearbox.First remove belt pulley.Then remove the bolts from around the outside of the bearing/seal retainer.Then tap the retainer with a brass hammer if it is stuck in the gearbox and very gently pull the output shaft assembly out of the gearbox.There should be some shims and a gasket save these shims and make a new gasket out of exactly the same thickness gasket meterial.Now unfold the foldover locks on the end of the shaft and remove the bolts and thick flat washer.Next step is to evenly heat the gear and bearing I used a mapp gas torch instead of the oxy accetylene torch so I wouldnt get it too hot.I stack 4x4 blocks in a criss cross fashion on the floor and placed two solid 2x3 inch pieces of flat stock on top of that and let the bearing rest on them.Then I heated a little more to get it back up to temperature and with a One inch diameter brass punch I drove the shaft out of the gear and bearing.Gear and bearing will come off as one piece.Then remove the woodruff key out of shaft and slide spacer tubing off of shaft.Now remove snap ring out of back of seal/bearing retainer,and tap end of shaft firmly on a block of wood and bearing/seal retainer will slide right off of shaft.Now drive out old seal and bearing and replace what you need to.Put everything back together and your ready to go.Not trying to be a know it all just hope any of you might use this information.Every H I have seen around hear has a bad leak at the gearbox.I think its simply from age just like the rest of the seals I have replaced on my H........Hope this helps someone.....RIVER BOTTOM FARMER
