The input shaft and gear is mounted in a holder and the shaft is supported by two bearings. The seal is in a separate seal holder that bolts to the input shaft bearing holder assembly. The seal holder is held on with 4 bolts. The input shaft holder is bolted to the transmission housing with 6 or 8 bolts. If you just take off the seal holder, there is no way the input shaft can fall down. You will have some "fun" down under there. To get the seal holder out, you will have to disconnect the main drive shaft coupling. Be prepared to replace the rubber washers and the metal cup washers in the coupling, as they are likely bad. Getting the coupling off the transmission input shaft may be a chore. I don't know if it will come out without taking out the clutch shaft or not. The seal runs on the coupling, not directly on the shaft, so the coupling must come off before you can take off the seal holder. I've not done an M, but on a Super H, I had to use a puller to get the drive coupling off. I've seen some say that these will come off with a pry bar once the retainer bolt and washer are out, but I had no such luck. I had the input shaft bearing assembly out anyway, so using the puller was no big deal.
