Other things to check before converting to 12V (unless you really want to do it) is take the starter switch off and clean the contacts (real simple job, nothing you can mess up) clean all the connections from battery/ground and starter, and replace any undersize (#4 or smaller) wires to the starter/ground with at least #2, preferably #0 wire. If it still turns slow, you haven't wasted anything if you convert to 12V.
