We do know the D-188 diesel was used in the 504. That engine is basically the 4 cylinder version of the 282 used in the 560, 656 and 706. The 460D used the same block as 560. I'm not suggesting you try and install a 6 cylinder engine in the 504. What I am saying is we know a D-188 will bolt right in with very little modification other than breather, wiring, etc. Problem is not many D-188 engines were built, so you will likely find that one scarce.

I would take a look at C-169 or C-175 engines from the 300 and 350 respectively. If those will work you would have a sleeved engine with a good reputation. I'm not saying I'm right, rather I'm hoping to get folks thinking of what is possible for you. I'm betting the C-169 or C-175 will bolt up as 504 is same torque tube as 460, and the only difference between those and 300 or 350, is placment of the hydraulic pump.
