806D range trans cover removal question

One of these days, probably when I finally can't get her in reverse, I'm gonna have to go through the linkage repair routine that's been described in numerous threads. In principal it doesn't sound like a major ordeal, but looking things over it appears to me that the steering pedestal (console?) needs to be lifted out of the way to get to the cover, and that does seem like a big deal. The pedestal has two hydraulic ports on each side which I assume have to be disconnected as well as all the shifter and fuel linkage and probably some wiring as well. Am I missing something or does the pedestal really need to be moved off the tractor? Thanks in advance.
