It can be done with two hammers, one to tap the chain apart, the other to use as an anvil, to back up the chain as you tap them apart/together. If you're "repairing" the chain, it's presumably worn badly enough to break, so it will probably come apart easily. New chains are a little tougher, and the chain tool does make the job go smoother. You can make your own chain tool by cutting a slot in an old piece of plow iron, like a landside. Make the slot wide and deep enough to fit the link in, and put it fairly close to one end so the chain can be flexed enough to take it apart.
