Had a Ford 8N do the same thing, found it did not have enough voltage at the coil. had 3 volts instead of 6plus. Hooked up a jumper wire, everything wokred correct. This is assuming you have a coil and distributor and not a mag. If you have a mag, you could have a weak coil.
