Repacking front wheel bearings

I am having a hard time getting the front wheels off my 41 M. The manuals are of no help. The spindle appears to be a straight shaft and not the taper type we see in later models. It does not have a castled nut but a large half-splitnut with a through bolt. I tried to take them off several years ago but couldn't. They appeared to have grease in them and the wheels did turn freely. I just think its time to repack them. I am planning to build some type of a puller. Anyone else have this problem?
