No serial # on M

My recently purchased Farmall M does not have the stamped serial # plate in place on the left side of the transmission housing (thanks Tom F. for helping me figure that out), is there another way I can confirm the actual serial # on the tractor or atleast confirm the actual year model? The guy I bought it from said it was a 1949 model, but I have found a stamped date (3-18-47)on the right side of the rear axle just below the brakes as well as some other numbers stamped in that area. Is my tractor actually a 1947 model or does this just refer to the date the axle was actually cast, since they most likely used this same axle on several if not all year models?
I have found some numbers stamped in different areas of the tractor such as the head, the carb, the axles, etc. do these represent different parts codes or could one of these lead me to the actual serial number? One thing to note is the paint on the tractor is really dull on the tin as well as the motor and looks consistent from the block to the transmission to the rear axle. With 60 years of service I know its still possible things could have been swapped years ago and unnoticable now, but there is no obvious signs of major components having been swapped, i.e. a shiny bright red engine block bolted to a dull transmission. Sorry so long, any feed back would be appreciated.
