Eldon, youre correct on your theory, but its may not be working for some other reasons??

With the light switch type of Generator Field current controller, the light switch either dead grounded the Gens Field for high charge or via a resistor for low charge and YES a full fledged 3 or 4 terminal VR ought to replace and eliminate that light switch function. Heres how I would proceed.

Make sure of wiring: GEN (or ARM) on VR to Gens Armature post,,,,,,,,,Field on VR to gens Field post,,,,,,,,BAT on VR up to ammeters load (NOT to batery) terminal. Make sure the VR's BAT terminal is always HOT.

NOWWWWWW If when running if you dead ground the Gens Field post it makes her charge but she never charges otherwise, I suspect its EITHER,,,,, The VR isnt well grounded, or the wires open from FLD on VR to FLD on Gen, or the VR is bad.

Are you sure the new VR is compatible for your tractors ground????? i.e. Pos or Neg???????

If the VR isnt well grounded, it cant perform its job of providing a good ground to the Gens Field post, CHECK THAT OUT

Also, if the battery is well charged the VR does its job of not overcharging the battery and it may automatically not be dead grounding the Field cuz the battery is well charged!!!!!!! See if it allows for a charge after engine cranking when the batery is weaker?????????? It may be fine cuz its NOT SUPPOSED to always have the Field dead grounded ya know !!!!!!!
