wire fire question

finally got her running good and had a little bit of a high idle RPM. It was running good and then the wires near the ignition started smoking might have been the wire back to the generator. The guy who tuned up the generator/cutout set it at 14 amps. Would this start burning a wire? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Phil
