I am not sure if this will be any help at all but my owners manual for the 504 says to check the level by removing the small boly on the left side of the tractor but do not remove the large hex bolt. On my tractor (which I just got)there is a large hex bolt with a smaller bolt drilled into it which is where I assume you are supposed to check the level. Problem is this small bolt is really small (1/4" ?). How is this any good?? Are you just supposed to fill until it runs out?? That doesn't make it real easy to check before you run it if you have to remove the fill plug and add some everytime. sorry about the long post. any help appreciated.
