FN,
I just did this to my '49 M. Took less than an hour. Got the parts from Beecham Equipment in Marlin, Tx. The counterman immediately knew what I needed and came back with a kit containing two seals and the gasket for the seal "holder". He told me, and I'd already been told by others on this site, to use both seals. I drove the old seal out and found that it was over 1" thick and had two "lips" inside. I reinstalled the new seals so they touched slightly different spots on the shaft than the old seal and no more gear lube puddles under the M.
Use both seals, be sure to install them correctly (with the sealing lip inside) and you'll have no more problems. Do be sure to check the bearing as RedBlooded said and you'll be back to work quickly.

Phil
