Busy Weekend

had to get to work just to catch up.

As I said Friday, I went to Blue Hill and got the IH350U on Saturday. It's been converted to 12 volt, and you can't even see the alternator, it's tucked neatly up under the hood, out of sight.

Another pleasant surprise was the total bill was only $350, including labor, for EVERYTHING, carb rebuild, distributor reconditioned, valve and side cover gaskets, 24" hydraulic hose, changed fluids, 12 volt conversion w/ alternator. I'm tickled! The most expensive part of the whole thing was $120 worth of brake parts.

Now the disapointment...It does NOT have live IPTO, it's trans driven. I'll learn to live with it I guess, at least the 560 has live IPTO. I wonder, since some 350's were available with live IPTO, is it possible to upgrade? WHat's involved, cost wise, and labor wise?

It does NOT have power steering, and that I NEED! What would it take to upgrade the steering mechanism (at the base of the steering column) to a PS unit? Cost? labor?

Also, the fast hitch doen't go up/down! The loader works fine 'cuz the pump for it is live, driven off the fron of the engine, but I don't know whether my fast hitch (I' refer to it as my 3pt) problem is the pump or the valve. Here's the symptoms:

The valve control lever (right side of seat) is just plain loose, it flops back and forth through about a 180 degree arc, without accomplishing anything. I did notice that when the lever was all the way forward, with a bit of pressure, you could here an almost impeceptible hydraulic "whine", but after about three attempts, it wouldn't even do that.

How can I determine whether I have a pump problem, or a valve problem?

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
