I don't follow you--most people pull start because the battery is dead. If it doesn't turn over with the starter, make sure the battery is fully charged and that all the connections are clean. In other words take each connection off from the starter, battery, and starter switch and clean them. Use large battery cables, minimum 2 gauge. If it doesn't turn over then you probably have starter problems. It should also start fairly easily with the hand crank if you have one. You can determine if you have valve problems or ring problems by running a wet and dry compression test. Even if it doesn't smoke out the exhaust, significant smoke from the draft tube (by the oil filter on the right side of engine) is an indication the engine is getting worn. It may not smoke much from there until the engine is hot. Might be a good idea to adjust the valve lash also. The engine has to be in pretty sad shape not to start.
