Eric, I checked my Parts CD's, 395406R1 does not come up in the listings for the C-221, C-263, C-291, or C-301. It also does not come up in the 460, 560, 660, 606, 706, 806, 656, 756, 856, 826, 666, 766, or 686 tractor listings. I also checked the D-236, D-282, and D-301 listings, nothing there either. The part numbers for these blocks are located on the left side, toward the bottom rear, so it sounds like you are in the right area. Mabey you misread it? The model number and serial number for the IH six-cylinder gas and glowplug diesel tractor engines is located on a small flat area on the oil galley just to the rear of the oil filter base. The numbers are stamped very lightly and small, so they are just about impossible to see unless the block is perfectly clean. Mabey your engine is from a different family, I noticed you said you looked "below the tach drive", the six-cylinder gas tractor engines do not have a seperate tach drive like the diesels, the tach is driven off the distributor. I also noticed you said you looked "above the breather tube". The breather tube on this series of engines comes off of the lifter cover, which would not make a good place to put serial/model numbers. I really only know tractor engines, so I wouln't be much help determining if it is a truck engine. I do know that the tractor six-cylinder gas/glowplug diesels were based off of the Black Diamond truck engines, so mabey thats what it is? Also, check the Photo Ads, someone just had a picture of a Red Diamond engine in there.
