Paul, you haven't been around any tractor newer than a 1962, then. IH hasn't had a mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the front end since the '60 series. It's been all hydrostatic from the release of the 706 and 806. That said, simple visual inspections are not sufficient to deem a component "fine." Even though everything looks "fine," something obviously isn't "fine" here. There's a box up in the steering column that's attached to the steering wheel. There are lines running down to the MCV valve assembly on the left side of the torque tube, just ahead of the steps. There's the MCV valve itself. There are lines running ahead to the steering cylinder, and there is the steering cylinder itself. Plus there is a hydraulic pump, filters, and fluid to check.
