Battery what should I do??

Hi guys. I posted awhile ago wasn't sure if I had a starter or battery problem with a 6 volt positive ground on my Super C I got in the fall. Put a 12 volt battery in the tractor and it starts great in this cold weather so looks like battery problem like you guys suggested.
Now to confuse me I read a post that you can put a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt generator. I did some tests and with my bad 6 volt battery I get 4 volts on the battery with tractor off and when I start tractor it is charging around 7.5 volts. I put the 12 volt battery in it read 12.5 volts. Started tractor it read 13.5 volts charging on my digimeater. Ok now would for some reason the voltage regulator sense the difference and allow more voltage to flow? Also think somebody hooked the voltage meater up backwards it always shows discharge but when turn lights on it goes closer to 0 instead of showing more discharge ( only did this with 6 volt battery don't want to blow my bulbs). Would this being hooked up backwards have something to do with it?
I guess what I would want an opnion on is can I run a 12 volt battery or should I stick to a 6 volt battery? Anybody have any ideas as to why I get charging just over the amount that the battery in the tractor is? Has me confused but that don't take much.
