Amp tellite 504

In my wiring diagram it shows the wire from the amp tellite 'spliced' into the wire from the regulator 'gen' terminal to the 'A' terminal on the generator. Rather than splice into the wire would it be acceptible to run the wire from the amp tellite to the terminal (gen) on the regulator? What is it that turns off the light once the generator starts?
