With the side play in the shaft it does need to be fixed. Will run better with a rebuilt/new one anyway, not even copnsidering the water problem. The only time I have ever had a wet dist cap problem on my 2444 is after washing the engine or when it sits out for a while in the rain, but it is always the next day after washing. Do you have any coolant leaks on the engine ? My dist also has small plugs in the back side of the dist shaft to remove for greasing and then replace, maybe yours had the plugs left out and is letting water get in that way ?? I would buy a rebuilt one, should be ok. But then that is what I would do, you have to decide for you. Ben
