I think the word special being cast into the block is due to the fact that IH did produce approx 500 Cs with the 123 block. These tractors were serial number 48000 - 48499. If I remember correctly I have seen a service bulleting that stated that certain piston & sleeve sets were only to be used in these tractors with "Special" cast into the block. I would assume that any overrun blocks or beginning production blocks would probably still have special cast into them until it was removed due to this block only being used in the production of the Super C & like tractors..
