Allen in NE: I have found in rebuilding these over the years that most of the levers have been beat around enough that they become bent inside. If this is the case that would explain your symptoms. This is the number 1 problems I have in rebuilding the new style couplers. If the lever turns with any resistance at all while not hooked up that is a tell-tale-sign. Also the snap-rings in the back may be bent. These new style couplers are not fun to rebuild. each one has around 40 o-rings/backup rings. The kit runs in the $60-80 range. One way to get around this and improve your couplers is to install an I.S.O. adapter kit. I don't remember what they cost but I have installed a few and they can't be beat. You basically gut the coupler housing of internal parts and put the I.S.O. couplers back in with new rubber dust caps. The bigggest thing I like, there are no levers.
